Cushendun secure win in ACHL Div 3 V Rasharkin

Saturday, August 28, 2010
On Saturday 28th August, Cushendun played against Rasharkin in the ACHL Division 3, Cushendun winning on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-14. Five minutes before the start of the game, Cushendun were looking at having to field 13 players, with ths usual absentees and the usual excuses - drinking, hair washing, baby sitting, visiting neighbours, couldn't be bothered, the Lammas fair is on, I am scared of teams not from North Antrim, I can't find my gear, I thought the match was on Sunday, Belsonic is on ....All reasonable and acceptable excuses!
So it was very much a new look team, with a few of the younger lads getting their chance, and they certainly took it with both hands, playing no small part in securing Cushenduns position in Division 3 for another year. With the wind at their backs, Cushendun came in at half time with a slightly comfortable 6 point lead, points coming from both frees and general play. The defence & midfield were very much on top, with Paul Mc Sparran turning in a vintage display of centre half back dominance (well for the first 5 minutes anyway before he was substituted for the marauding Michael Magee).
In the second half, Rasharkin fought hard and came back to within 3 points at one stage, however Cushendun kept picking off their scores and two goals, one made and scored by Dominic Mc Quillian and one from Brendan Mc Sparran, when his poaching abilities were used to the maximum with only the keeper to beat and 5 yards out.
It was a well fought victory for Cushendun and with one game left, against glenarm away on Thursday night, several of the players can take a well earned rest, whilst the rest of the part timers can hopefully spend time reflecting on their attitude to our beautiful game!
